Escape from Varanasi: Ramnagar Fort

After Ganges river rituals at sunrise, we took a motor boat trip down river to Ramnagar Fort with Rajkumar and his family (surprise passengers on their way to a birthday party, their gift being fish caught by their son en route!). On the way we saw the damage and destruction caused by recent flooding.

Our destination was the Ramnagar Fort, the residence of the Maharaja of Varanasi.

It was somewhat worse for wear but the unusual museum collection (featuring vintage motor cars, stuffed tiger's heads, gold elephant crowns and regal ivory seats) was fascinating. We also met the maharaja's ceremonial elephants just as we left!

The beginning of our visit to Varanasi featured the Golden Temple, but we ended under the 'Golden Arches' with a McFlurry (or as Nic calls them a 'McSlurry')!
