After our best train journey yet, on time and great countryside, we arrived in Jodphur, famed for the Mehrangarh fort. After a morning at the bazaar (Carolyn girding her loins) we bravely undertook the 'flying fox' as recommended by Boris Johnson (!). The views of the blue city in the sunset were stupendous (when Carolyn opened her eyes!). The longest zip wire, over moats and battlements, was over 300 metres, so lots of time to 'enjoy' the experience!
The next day we visited the fort proper and another audio tour. The stark contrast between the detailed marble work and sometimes garish mirrored interiors (note the giant Christmas baubles) was striking.
We spent the evening on a cooking lesson in a local home. Rekah was a delightful teacher and we also enjoyed the company of her family. We decorated our vegetarian biryani with silver as Diwali was fast approaching. Her daughter gave the much anticipated first gulab jamun (i.e. doughnut) to Lord Shiva at their home shrine, as is always done when making desserts in the hope that the God will bring sweetness to their lives.
